Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

My commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is rooted deeply in my belief that art education provides a powerful medium to enhance equity, celebrate diversity, and commit to more inclusive ways of being. Every student enters the classroom with a unique narrative, shaped by their life experiences, and through art, these stories unfold. I am dedicated to fostering an inclusive studio environment where students feel empowered to both share and appreciate these myriad artistic expressions. Art serves as a window into the artist's world, shedding light on their past, present, and aspirations. By sharing their stories, students initiate dialogues that have the potential to inspire empathy, catalyze action, and drive both individual and societal transformation. My methods include:

  • Showcasing works from artists of diverse origins.

  • Discussing readings that honour diversity and compassion with writers from diverse backgrounds

  • Valuing and acknowledging the personal narratives evident in each artwork.

  • Maintaining a space for respect and empathy.

  • Ensuring that the learning environment caters to a spectrum of skill levels and is responsive to those facing unique challenges.

Throughout my career, I have been privileged to guide hundreds of students and collaborate with researchers and patients from all walks of life. I've borne witness to the struggles of marginalization and stigmatization. My classroom has been enriched by the voices of first-generation university attendees, individuals from varied economic backgrounds, myriad racial and national identities, people living with disabilities, and an array of gender and sexual identities. Their shared experiences have often provided invaluable insights, revealing perspectives previously uncharted by many, myself included. Furthermore, I have actively participated in equity, diversity, and inclusion seminars to identify and rectify prevalent biases in research and educational spaces.

Diversity is the centre of my artistic and research endeavours. I work closely with underserved communities, from indigenous peoples to those grappling with mental health issues, disabilities, addiction, or cancer. Engaging with their lived experiences has broadened my horizons, fostering an empathetic understanding that shapes my art and narratives. I am devoted to crafting artworks that offer a safe, inclusive space, which not only validates patients’ experiences but also challenges prevailing prejudices against marginalized individuals. Additionally, my public speaking engagements often spotlight candid personal narratives on mental health, aiming to raise awareness and open dialogue.

I infuse this empathetic perspective in my teaching ethos. Over the years, I've been honoured to guide countless students, each with their unique backstories and dreams. My mission has always been to honour these narratives, providing a nurturing space where they can delve deep into their passions, enabling them to articulate their truths both in life and art. My dedication to art, research, and education is intertwined with a commitment to promoting equity, celebrating diversity, and advancing social justice.
