Introduction to Video Art

Time is the added dimension of video as we move from earlier photography projects. Learning how to bring a viewer through time with edits, pacing, sound, narrative, or experimental explorations are crucial for successful videos. I use two introductory projects to aid the students in developing a sense of time.

The first is a still 3-minute mediation of something unfolding through time: light, colour, natural forces. This is about developing a sense of ‘noticing’ across time and learning the ability to slow down and experience your world.

The second video project is the paradoxical provocation of a video still life. A still life is a historically static genre, however, the students always find an interesting solution to have a temporal element unfold. This adds to our discussions about creative problem solving in relation to a sustained artistic practice.
